Connie Finney

 

“She pours her heart and soul into the students,” says a colleague in describing Professor of Education Connie Finney. Finney has been investing herself in Houghton students for over 20 years, preparing them to be excellent teachers and active contributors to their communities. Around campus, she is known as a reconciler and connector of persons. “Connie is sensitive and perceptive to the needs of those around her,” an observer notes. “In word and deed she lives out the ideals and teachings of Jesus Christ.”

 

Finney brings to her classes a sound knowledge of her discipline, of course—she has a masters degree in college student development and her doctorate in Educational Psychology from the University of Buffalo—but students also appreciate her as an interested advisor and friend and a creative, engaging teacher. They see her in class and out, at musical events, concerts and other settings where students are likely to be found. She, in turn, enjoys their energy and potential. “I love their enthusiasm for life, their desire to grow in faith and to serve others, and their sharp, active minds.”

 

Finney’s own Houghton College experience included playing two varsity sports, majors in math and education, singing with an outreach group and service as a residence hall assistant. “I appreciated the Christian community—the friendships and the many opportunities to learn about God together—and I still love those aspects of life here.”

 

Though immersed in Houghton College life, she remains in touch with high school culture through regular visits and contact with teachers, and even spent a recent sabbatical break teaching junior high math. She describes her primary research interest these days as “Millennial Learners” and “how they approach learning differently from previous generations.” Finney will be ready to understand and reach out to them as they arrive as students at Houghton College.
