Houghton College now
offers a minor in forestry and a forestry emphasis
within the biology major. The program enables Houghton
biology majors to spend up to a year at the SUNY College of
Environmental Science and Forestry New York State Ranger
School at Wanakena in the Adirondack Park, complete their
biology degree and earn an associate’s in applied science (AAS)
degree in forest technology.
“This
forestry emphasis at Houghton is unique among Christian
colleges. It prepares students for forestry work overseas,
where mission organizations increasingly are working with
local organizations to reforest areas degraded and
deforested through poor stewardship,” said Professor of
Biology James Wolfe.
Houghton’s
program gives both biology and non-science majors the
opportunity to earn a forestry minor or a forestry emphasis
within the biology major.
