Alumni Association Awards
Three Legacy Scholarships
The board of
directors of the Houghton College Alumni Association (HCAA)
awarded three Legacy Scholarships of $1,500 each (renewable
each year for up to four years) for the 2006-07 year. Money
for the scholarships comes from the royalties received from
the Houghton College/Bank of America MasterCard and the
Group Savings Plan for auto, home and apartment insurance
with Liberty Mutual.
The board had
awarded one scholarship for 2005-06, with the intent to add
a second scholarship for 2006-07 and one each year as the
stream of income from the affinity programs grew. However,
the programs are growing at a more-rapid rate than expected,
so the board was able to add two scholarships for 2006-07.
In addition
to the three Legacy Scholarships, the alumni association
works with the athletic department to award two $500
scholarships—one for “Champions of Character” and one for
“Sports Ministry”—to athletes who submit essays on these
topics. The royalties from the affinity programs also
provide the funds for these scholarships.
The alumni association appreciates the support
our alumni are giving to our affinity programs, which, in
turn, support the academic endeavors of our students. You
can help simply by buying services you already use. For
information and a free, no-obligation quote on insurance,

America MasterCard, contact the

New Activities Planned
for 2007 Summer Alumni Weekends
Put the dates on your
calendars now for the 2007 Summer Alumni Weekends (SAWs):
July 13-15 and July 20-22. There are major changes and
surprises planned for next summer’s gatherings. For example,
the alumni office is working on developing an “Alumni
College,” to take place between the two alumni weekends.
Houghton College faculty and staff will offer in-depth
workshops and seminars on topics of interest. Another
project under discussion is a “trail development” in the
college forests. This project would include both the
physical work of trail clearing, as well as the less
physical demands of making signage, maps, brochures, etc.
The college
will share details of these and other activities as they are
set. In the meantime, save the date and plan to come. The
