Katelyn Wells

For Houghton College sophomore Katelyn Wells Saturday mornings are not lazy or relaxed. Unlike most of her classmates she doesn’t sleep until lunch but instead gets up early to travel on a bus to Buffalo.

This is because Katelyn is one of the most enthusiastic participants of the Journey’s End refugee tutoring program. In fact, it even influenced her decision to attend Houghton for college. She says, “Choosing a college was not easy for me. There were a couple of other really good Christian schools that were in the running for a while.

I chose to attend Houghton because of the unique course offerings and the service opportunities. I was interested in studying linguistics, and was fascinated by the program here. I also heard about the Journey’s End program. I thought it was great that the intercultural studies department valued an practical application for information learned in class.”

For Katelyn this integration of faith and learning through service is in an extremely important part of her Houghton experience. She emphasizes this in saying, “Up to this point, the best part of college has been the opportunity to communicate with people from different traditions of Christianity…It has been a good time to learn about God and try to take off the glasses that my Christian tradition views God through, to widen and improve my view of God. My classes and my activities have encouraged and facilitated this, and it has been such a growing experience.”

Katelyn’s experience at Journey’s End is facilitated by your gifts to The Houghton Fund. “Funding is very important. I doubt that I would be able to make it to Buffalo every week if I had to pay the gas bill, but I think it is intensely important that these refugees, these image bearers of God, are cared for,” said Katelyn.
