SCRIPTURE AND THE DISCIPLINES
The final four lectures of the 2012-13 Faculty Lecture Series are about “Scripture and the Disciplines.” This series-within-a-series was inspired by the work of Dr. Carl Schultz, emeritus professor of Old Testament, who shared his insights on the intersection of religion and science with generations of Houghton students through a course called “Science and Scripture,” which he developed with support from the John Templeton Foundation. Dr. Schultz taught at Houghton for over 40 years (1965 to 2011), 21 as chair of the department of religion and philosophy. In addition to teaching hundreds of classes in biblical literature and Old Testament, Dr. Schultz made over a dozen trips to Israel with students, alumni, and church groups. An ordained Wesleyan minister, Dr. Schultz served as pastor of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church and Ischua Union Church for over 35 years.
