contemplate the complexity and beauty of other cultures.
Semester Abroad
Program in Africa
You will ask questions you have
never asked. You will consider ministry in a whole new
light. God will use this experience to transform your spiritual
understanding of His work and His glory.
Course Descriptions:
REQUIRED COURSES:
Course #1 – 3 weeks in
Kampala, Uganda
INCL 340 -- African Traditional Religion (ATR)
This course deals with an overview of African traditional
religion and the challenges ATR poses to Christians in Africa.
(3 credits)
Course #2 – 3 weeks in
Kigali, Rwanda
INCL 345 -- Issues of Peacebuilding
You will study the ethnic conflicts of Rwanda as a means of
learning issues in healing trauma, building peace, and
establishing reconciliation. (3 credits)
Course #3 – 3 weeks in
Kampala, Uganda
–ECON 240 -- Development Economics
This course acquaints you with the basics of development
economics. It is concerned with the application of economics to
the problems of developing countries. (3 credits)
Course #4 – Full Semester
ENG 206 -- Post-Colonial African Literature
This multi-genre literature course introduces major authors of
Africa’s literary awakening. Selected readings will
broaden your conceptual base for understanding what you hear and
see during your semester in Africa. (3 credits)
311 -- Practicum (4 weeks)
Hands-on data collection and/or field experience at a Food for
the Hungry development project site. – Available in
Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda. (variable credits )
OPTIONAL COURSES
LAN 101 -- Introductory
Kiswahili or Luganda

Accreditation:
Accrediting schools -- Houghton
College, New York. DayStar University, Kenya; George Fox
University, Oregon; Greenville College, Illinois; and Huntington
University, Indiana.
Program Costs:
The cost to the student is the
standard tuition from the sending institution (Houghton, DayStar,
George Fox, Greenville, and Huntington). This cost will cover
tuition, room, board, and international airfare (round trip from
Phoenix, AZ to Entebbe, Uganda).
Additional Costs:
-
Students are responsible for all personal expenses,
including travel to/from Phoenix (for orientation), passport
and visa fees, immunizations and activity spending money.
-
$300 deposit -- due from the student once accepted by Food
for the Hungry. The $300 will be put towards the cost
of tuition.
