Houghton's Off-Campus Programs

Our students have studied in over 40 countries and 10 states.

Annually more than 52% of Houghton students have enriched their educational experience through study abroad and off-campus semester programs. While this is a requirement for students with a major in Spanish, Intercultural Studies, or International Relations, students with other majors also benefit from these experiences. Early planning allows for an off-campus experience to fit most areas of study.

Houghton College offers several of its own study abroad and off-campus programs, both in semester long and intensive formats . Additional opportunities are possible through a variety of colleges, universities and organizations.

Houghton College students who choose to study with a Houghton College program receive the same financial aid package as if they were on campus. For all other programs, students' financial aid packages will be recalculated for that semester only. Details can be obtained through the Student Financial Services Office.

Honors Programs

Honors Program

Two of Houghton College's Honors Programs combine an integrated curriculum with an international experience. Both programs involve selected first-year students in an in-depth study of Western culture.

Contemporary Contexts: For this option, students begin on campus in the Fall semester, spend the majority of the Spring semester together in on campus courses, and visit a major international site during Mayterm.  Each year the program will meet a unique set of integrative studies requirements and possibly other credits.  Fall of the sophomore year finds the students in one final class to round out the experience and their study of the western contemporary context.  Each cohort may have a varied and unique experience and set of courses met by the program.

East Meets West: For this option, students remain on the Houghton campus during the spring semester and travel to Eastern Europe for May Term. This course of study combines history, literature, Christianity, and politics with a focus on the relationship between the "East" (Eastern Europe), the "Middle East," and the "West." The student will take 12 hours on-campus (with the option to take another course), and three hours during Mayterm in Eastern Europe.

Balkans Semester

Balkans Semester ProgramThis new program will expose students to three major cultures — the Catholic, Orthodox, and Muslim worlds — through time blocks spent in Croatia (both on the Adriatic and in beautiful, Habsburg Zagreb); in Sarajevo, Bosnia, with its mosques, churches, and the Ottoman quarter; and Macedonia, with its rich heritage of monasteries, its beautiful mountains and lakes.

The program is academically and spiritually very challenging, with strong emphases on the diversity, coexistence, and conflicts of culture, history and faith. All amid spectacular scenery and wonderful local people.
