Houghton's Off-Campus Programs

Our students have studied in over 40 countries and 10 states.

Annually over 40% of Houghton students have enriched their educational experience through study abroad and off-campus semester programs. While this is a requirement for students with a major in Spanish, French, Intercultural Studies, or International Relations, students with other majors also benefit from these experiences. Early planning allows for an off-campus experience to fit most areas of study.

Houghton College offers six of its own study abroad and off-campus programs. Additional opportunities are possible through a variety of colleges, universities and organizations.

Houghton College students who choose to study with a Houghton College program receive the same financial aid package as if they were on campus. For all other programs, students' financial aid packages will be recalculated for that semester only. Details can be obtained through the Student Financial Services Office.

First-Year Honors Program

Honors Program

Houghton College's First-Year Honors Program combines an integrated curriculum with one of two European experiences. Both programs involve selected first-year students in an in-depth study of Western culture.

The Meaning of the West: For this option, students are on-site in London during the spring semester. This course of study combines history, literature, philosophy, and the fine arts in a connected narrative of western ideas and culture from the ancient Greeks through the 20th century, affording students a thorough preparation for more advanced study. In London, honors students earn 15 credit hours toward their Houghton degree.

East Meets West: For this option, students remain on the Houghton campus during the spring semester and travel to Eastern Europe for May Term. This course of study combines history, literature, Christianity, and politics with a focus on the relationship between the "East" (Eastern Europe), the "Middle East," and the "West." The student will take 12 hours on-campus (with the option to take another course), and three hours during Mayterm in Eastern Europe.
