Art at Houghton
Broadening Your Educational Opportunities
The study of art at Houghton is structured to develop an understanding of the meaning, both past and present, of art in society. Houghton art students gain confidence in their ability to integrate faith, knowledge, and creativity. The art major complements the Christian liberal arts experience to prepare students for teaching, professional art production, and graduate studies. The program is diversified through visiting artists, on-campus exhibits in Houghton's Ortlip Gallery located in the Center for the Arts, and field trips that expose students to cultural resources in cities throughout the northeast.
We encourage art students to make every effort to view the very best works of art, and we maintain an active travel program to support those activities. Recent art trips have taken students to New York City, Washington D.C., Boston, Cleveland, Toronto, Rochester and Buffalo. The art department also offers European art-history experiences during May term every other spring, traveling to cities such as Paris, London, Florence, Rome, and Madrid.
