Art Scholarships
The art department of Houghton College has a limited number of
partial tuition scholarships available for incoming freshmen
interested in majoring in art. These scholarships are awarded to
students who demonstrate exceptional ability through the
scholarship portfolio requirements.
Awarded scholarships are good for one year, and are
automatically renewed each year as long as the student is a
declared art major, and maintains work of a standard consistent
with a merit scholarship award. It is important to stress that
scholarships are awarded with an expectation of continued
excellence in the practice of art, and that recipients serve as
a model within the department. The Art Department faculty, if
unanimously agreed, may revoke or redistribute scholarship
awards based on a student’s performance in the major.
The scholarship portfolio requirement is an attempt to identify
the strongest candidates for the awards, while at the same time
giving everyone who wishes to submit an award request an equal
opportunity to compete. Up to $15,000 dollars annually is
available for distribution. Scholarships are awarded in amounts
from $500 to $2,000.
The folio will consist of the following:
- letter of application
- portfolio of five drawings
- six to ten images representative of your best work
- Self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage if you
want your submission returned
Personal Image Requirement
Images should consist of examples of your best work. We
encourage the submission of standard photos or digital prints.
Artwork should appear as large as possible within the frame. 3-D
work should be photographed against a neutral background. Glare
and hard shadows should be avoided. The back should be clearly
marked with your name, the medium, and the date created.
Drawing Requirement
Folded Cloth / Tonal Range
- Drape a white or pale printless pillowcase-sized cloth
over an object so that the cloth drapes, and the object itself
is
hidden. Render this cloth in the full gray scale.
Cup and Saucer / Axial Perspective and Symmetry
- Render a printless cup and saucer against a plain white
background.
Self Portrait / Figure Drawing
- Draw your face from life, using a mirror. It can be
rendered in grays or consist of line only.
Room Drawing / Vanishing Point Perspective
- Draw an inside corner of your bedroom, in line only.
Flag Design / Spatial Organization

waving flag.) Use a range of grays to indicate differences in
color.
