Science and Math Colloquium

The Science and Math Colloquium is intended to inform those interested in the natural sciences and mathematics about current discipline-related topics.  The talks are aimed at those with the first-year course work in the related discipline but is frequently accessible to others.  Speakers include faculty, advanced students, and guest speakers from other colleges, industry or professions.  Talks are usually held Tuesdays starting at noon during a meal in the cafeteria.

Speakers with a variety of disciplines and perspectives are invited. Houghton College views this as an opportunity to engage with and critically appraise different paradigms in science and mathematics. Attendees who would like to further discuss the content of the talks are invited to stay after the talks and speak with a Houghton faculty member.

If you would like to speak in the Science and Math Colloquium or have suggestions for topics or speakers, please contact Kristin Camenga at kristin.camenga@houghton.edu.

Topic: "A Computational Approach to Bible Study"

Abstract: Using computers to aid study of the Bible has gained popularity recently. People can search keywords of interest or find co-occurrences of related words in the Bible. This talk will introduce a computational approach to identifying the similarities and differences among the books of the Bible. To showcase this new way of biblical study, we analyze the four Gospels in the New Testament, the five books of Moses in the Old Testament, and then all books in the whole Bible. Our data-driven approach to the learning of the Bible has made several interesting findings that could not be accomplished with traditional methods.

ALL STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF AND VISITORS ARE WELCOME.
