Minor in Economics
Houghton offers a minor in
economics. The economics minor consists of 14 credit hours,
frequently combined with a major in business administration,
political science, sociology, or international studies. The
study of economics at Houghton contributes to a rigorous,
liberal-arts preparation for further professional study, such as
in law, or for graduate study in economics, business,
journalism, politics, or one of the other social sciences.
The economics curriculum includes courses in Introduction to
Economics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International
Economics, American Economic History, Managerial Economics,
Comparative Economic Systems, Money and Banking, and Independent
Study—all taught by a Ph.D. economist and published scholar.
The curriculum stresses the wide application of the market model
and of institutional theory for explaining individual and social
behavior in various contexts. Students also explore the
advantages and disadvantages of various systems of economic
organization. Economics serves therefore as a useful complement
to study in the other social sciences, especially political
science and sociology, as well as in the fields of management,
finance, and accounting.
