Business Internships

The internship program provides an opportunity to gain an understanding of business principles discussed in the classroom as applied in real life situations.  Most employers look for job experience when hiring, so the Houghton business internship is a valuable asset on a resume and may be the edge you need in securing that first job or on gaining entrance into a top graduate school.

Operating from Houghton’s Buffalo Suburban Campus in West Seneca, the semester-long program mixes work and classroom study.  Buffalo area businesses provide a variety of work experiences for which each intern receives up to six hours of academic credit while also taking six hours of regular course work taught by Houghton business professors.

A member of the business department makes all placements in consultation with the student and according to student interest.  Once the semester begins, the student’s supervisor is visited regularly to be sure that the experience runs smoothly, to evaluate performance, and to provide the student with feedback on strengths and weaknesses.

Hard work on the part of previous interns and careful supervision by the faculty have earned the Houghton internship program the respect of the Buffalo business community.  The program certainly is building a bridge between the business community and the campus.

This program is designed for the fall semester of a student’s senior year.  Normally applications are received in February for the following fall.  For students unable to participate in the fall program an abbreviated 3-hour internship is available in the spring semester of one’s senior year while living on the main campus.
