Biochemistry (BS)

This major is designed for those students planning to pursue graduate study and professional research specifically in the emerging biomolecular fields, such as molecular genetics, biomolecular engineering, genomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Because of the extensive requirements of the program itself, no academic minor is required of students majoring in biochemistry.

The BA degrees consists of fewer credit hours in the respective science (allowing for a broader choice of other courses in other departments), and they are designed primarily for those students choosing a second major or seeking preparation for medical programs or high-school teaching.

The BS degrees are more intensive in the chosen discipline, incorporating more credit hours of study, and they are designed for students seeking preparation for graduate school and professional research. Specifics of the respective degree programs in chemistry and biochemistry are shown below.

Students majoring in another field may Minor in chemistry by taking two semesters of general chemistry, plus 12 credit hours of chemistry above the general chemistry level. Pre-medical students majoring in another field often minor in chemistry.

Houghton also offers a Concentration in chemistry within the General Science Major.
