Communication at Houghton
"In the end the communicator will be confronted with the old problem, of what to say and how to say it." – Edward R. Murrow
Communication is a vital task of being human.
How we communicate shapes who we are. Our postmodern, digital, media-saturated age demands that we view the interaction between language, technology, and images in new ways.
What do we have to say to one another? And how should we say it?
We're a department committed to this task. Serious communication requires careful listening. Studying communication at Houghton challenges assumptions about the fabric of culture.
Your studies should match your passions. Our students choose a field of concentration to match their most passionate interests and questions. We offer three tracks of concentration: Rhetorical Communication, Public Relations/Marketing, and Visual Communication/Media Arts.
- Rhetorical Communication – public discourse in a complex world
- Integrated Marketing Communication – clarity and integrity in professional communication
- Media Arts and Visual Communication – images and interaction in a new media environment
Students can also complete a general communication major that draws on courses from all of these concentrations.
