Media Arts and Visual Communication

Media arts and visual communication explores the complex world of visual media-making, with most classes devoted to creative studio work. The curriculum is a unique program of academic media studies combined with practical creative work.

Our program emphasizes informed and thoughtful development of digital media skills. This includes new forms of creation, distribution, and social engagement outside traditional structures, such as video blogs and digital storytelling. Our state-of-the-art Macintosh Media Arts Lab is both workspace and playground, providing students with the best tools available for exploring their most compelling visual communication ideas.

Where can it take me?

What mass media scholars sometimes call "the public conversation" has never been a more exciting and diverse cultural space! People who are traditionally shut out of this conversation are finding ways for their voices to be heard.

Independent cinema, Internet and interactive media, support for non-profit organizations, alternative political or social speech, media and performance art, documentary from a personal point of view, and storytelling/oral history are just a few areas where students are encouraged to dive in and explore.
