Reading/Literacy Education Faculty Opening
The Houghton College Education Department invites applications and nominations for a full-time tenure-track position in Reading/Literacy Education. The individual filling this position will join a strong, collegial department as it launches a new Masters degree program in literacy education.

Connie Finney Receives Excellence in Teaching Award
Connie Finney Receives Excellence in Teaching AwardMuch loved and respected Education Department faculty member Connie Finney was honored in a college chapel service on September 3, 2008 as this year’s recipient of the Excellence in Teaching award.  The award is given each year to a full time faculty member who is recommended to the Faculty Development Committee by peers on faculty with additional support from student recommendations.

Through a Refugee Lens: Communicating Through Photography
Photography became the catalyst for Claire Essley's project, “Through a Refugee Lens: Communicating Through Photography,” that won an award at the 42nd Annual TESOL (Teaching English as a Second Language) International Convention in New York City.   Go ›

Master's Degree Program in Literacy Education
Houghton College will launch its Master of Education in Literacy Education program in the summer of 2009.  Our program leads to the master’s degree and to New York state certification in literacy from birth to grade six.  Students advance through the program in cohorts, completing their work in either 14 or 26 months.

Students/Faculty Attend CEC
Professors and students traveled to Louisville, KY in April to attend the national meeting of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).

Presentation at New York CEC Convention
In November 2006, Dr. Cathy Freytag, Associate Professor of Education delivered a collaborative conference presentation with two students (Meredith Howard '07, Emily Estochen, '07) and one alumna (Hannah Becker, '06) at the New York State Council for Exceptional Children annual convention in Albany.

Students Volunteer with Compeer
On Saturday, March 17, 2007, Houghton College held its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Day.  Members of Houghton’s education club, Teachers of Today and Tomorrow (TOTT), traveled to Rochester to interact with youth and their families served by the Compeer mentoring program.
