Houghton TESOL Students Partner in Local School District
In partnership with Mt. Morris Central School, Houghton College
TESOL majors worked alongside ESL teacher, Gloria Dancause, to
experience life as an ESL teacher. Laura Iseminger, Nuk Kongkaw,
and Catherine Bennett spent Wednesday mornings observing the
teaching practices appropriate for English language learners
they had studied in their college classroom in action in Mrs.
Dancause’s ESL classroom. This regular interaction deepened
their understanding of ways to meet the varied needs of English
language learners. They also created and implemented lessons of
their own and received valuable feedback from an experienced ESL
teacher.
“Being able to observe at Mt. Morris was a great opportunity to not only see how an ESL class works, but also what is asked of ESL teachers. I learned that being an ESL teacher in a school means so much more than simply teaching English and it’s certainly not for the faint of heart.”
