Studying English literature at Houghton focuses on developing critical and creative thinking skills through the study of literature. Because literature is a storehouse of human histories, societies, cultures, and worldviews, its study can broaden one’s intellectual rigor and develop one’s values and faith by interacting with a variety of challenging perspectives. The result is the development of the whole person, someone capable of pursuing worthwhile vocational goals or further studies in a solid graduate program.
