Family Studies at Houghton

Houghton offers a minor in family studies. The interdisciplinary program combines the fields of anthropology, sociology, psychology, and religion in order to provide an integrative field of study focused on the institution of the family.

The minor consists of 15 credit hours of coursework in addition to the introductory courses in psychology and sociology (six credit hours). Two core courses are required: Introduction to Marriage and Family Studies (a foundational course for the minor) and Introduction to Family Systems (which introduces students to the field of family therapy). Elective courses include Human Sexuality (psychology), Theological Foundations of the Family (theology), and Gender Relations (sociology), among others. In addition to the classroom experiences, various practicum and internship opportunities are available for credit.

The family studies program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue graduate training and professional careers in human services, as well as fill leadership roles in the church, family, and community.
