Linguistics at Houghton
Houghton offers a minor in linguistics consisting of 15 credit hours and a concentration in linguistics as part of our intercultural studies major. Houghtons ongoing affiliation with Wycliffe Bible Translators affords our students highly professional, well-trained, field-experienced instructors, all of whom bring a committed Christian perspective to their work.
The study of linguistics is an important complement to the study of foreign languages and to fields such as anthropology and missions, including intercultural studies. It may also be important for students studying English as a second language and for those interested in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) as a career. Others include international-business students and education majors facing multilingual classrooms. Philosophy and psychology students find that the areas of semantics and phonology overlap with their fields.
The linguistics curriculum at Houghton includes courses in Sociolinguistics, Phonetics, Phonology, and Grammar. The classroom experience can be extended through study-abroad programs available in many parts of the world, including Houghtons own highly regarded Houghton in Tanzania.
