Students Attend Mini-Conference

Nine Houghton College physical education majors attended the Central Western and Western Zone Mini-Conference held at Roberts Wesleyan College on March 13. Six of the students – Lenore Bassett, Briana Dawson, Paul Estes, Carissa Lang, Rachel Lees, and Aaron Newell – presented seven activities and three lesson plans to an audience of current professionals and current college students on the topic of Integrating Core Subjects Into an Elementary Physical Education Class. Integration topics included Vocabulary, Math, Geography, Phonics, and Science. Students also attended sessions throughout the day that included topics in career development, regulations and standards for PE, inclusive/adaptive curriculums, and activity sessions on games and warm-up activities.
PEP Grant
Beginning in 2008, Houghton Physical Education/Exercise Studies
and Recreation/Leisure Studies became associated with a local
Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant awarded to 3 local school
districts.

Day at Houghton
Nearly 100 students from the 3 schools associated with the PEP
Grant – Bolivar-Richburg, Friendship, and Scio – made the short
bus ride to Houghton on January 31, 2009.
