Houghton College: Physics Department

Students design and construct bridges made of balsa wood. Computer models of the bridge structure are used in the design process. Students predict the maximum load for their bridge, and, by studying the properties of the balsa wood, predict the member most likely to fail first. In the contest, the bridges are tested.
