Recreation/Leisure Studies at
Houghton
Houghton
offers a
major in recreation and leisure studies, leading to the
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Designed in the tradition of
the liberal arts, the program helps to prepare students for
careers in the leisure services. Backed by a faculty with both
academic preparation and practical experience, the 32-hour major
provides options in outdoor recreation,
therapeutic
recreation, and equestrian studies. The core requirements—the same for each option—consist of courses focusing on both theory and application, which attempt to develop a Christian worldview related to topics in leisure, work, and the society in which we live. An overview of careers in leisure service programming is also included, as well as an internship experience during the student's senior year. Study abroad experiences are available and encouraged. Each program option views all leisure experiences as therapeutic.
The outdoor recreation option recognizes student interests in using God's
creation in the outdoor environment as a tool to teach
individuals to be good stewards of our natural resources.
Natural resource management and planning is the focus in this
option, as well as using outdoor activities as therapeutic tools
in behavior modification. Working with youth at risk, juvenile
delinquents, and academic underachievers is a typical
professional pursuit.
The therapeutic recreation option recognizes the
study of leisure and leisure behavior as a programming tool for
individuals with special needs. A study of the characteristics
and profiles of physically, socially and mentally challenged
individuals is the focus of this option. Graduates typically go into government, private/non-profit, or commercial leisure services designed to provide leisure opportunities to the public at large.
The equestrian studies option
is
designed so that the student can acquire a liberal arts
education and be well-rounded in the knowledge of horses, stable
management, the teaching of riding, and the history and
philosophy of training, teaching and riding. This option
prepares the student to gain employment after graduation as a
riding instructor, as a stable or riding program manager, or as
a trainer.
Broadening Your Educational Opportunities
The therapeutic recreation internship provides you with
opportunities to work with various special populations in
leisure education and counseling by using creative therapy in
music, art, sports, etc. Special populations
usually include youth at risk, individuals with mental and
physical disabilities, and older adults. The outdoor
education option provides you with opportunities to work in
various environmental settings such as national parks and forest
and environmental education programs. Ecotours to
Honduras, Central America, Tanzania, and the North American West
are offered to broaden your worldview.
