Recreation and Leisure Studies at HoughtonHoughton offers a major in recreation and leisure studies, leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Designed in the tradition of the liberal arts, the program helps to prepare students for careers in the leisure services.

Backed by a faculty with both academic preparation and practical experience, the 32-hour major provides options in outdoor recreation, therapeutic recreation, and equestrian studies.

Broadening Your Educational Opportunities

The therapeutic recreation internship provides you with opportunities to work with various special populations in leisure education and counseling by using creative therapy in music, art, sports, etc. Special populations usually include youth at risk, individuals with mental and physical disabilities, and older adults. The outdoor education option provides you with opportunities to work in various environmental settings such as national parks and forest and environmental education programs. Ecotours to Honduras, Central America, Tanzania, and the North American West are offered to broaden your worldview.
