Regarding the Biblical Studies, Theology & Philosophy Program

Even though I am not using my Bible major in my current studies (in med school), I feel that I used what I learned in my everyday life – in Bible studies, leading small groups, working at a Christian camp, and simply in my daily relationship with God.  I want to come back and take more classes!  I really appreciated the religion faculty and respected their wisdom in the course materials as well as their ability to challenge the students to really think about what we were learning – presenting all sides to many issues.  I really loved my Bible classes – thanks a lot! I’m proud to be a Houghton alumna, and very excited to hear about the many changes you are navigating just now.  I was a Communication major with some extra time on my hands, curricularly-speaking.  I chose to use those extra hours/credits to earn double-major in Bible – and I did so because my experience in required core classes in the Bible division had made me feel, like no other classes, that my brain and my heart were fully, delightfully alive.  The professors made all the difference! How exciting to hear of the new MA in Theological Studies.  Had it been offered at the time I was at Houghton, I think it very likely that I would have stayed there, rather than going on elsewhere.  (Jessica Fortt Boggs, graduate ’00; jessica.boggs@juno.com)

The religion professors were godly role models.  I appreciated their insight, wisdom, and spiritual support.  I wish I had been required or encouraged to take Greek or Hebrew (I minored in Latin).  I cherish my experience in each Bible class I had at Houghton College. Houghton was an incredible experience for me, both personally and professionally.  I thoroughly enjoyed the [Religion] major and the faculty, and I felt very well prepared for graduate studies.  In fact, I experienced a much higher level of readiness than most all of my peers in my graduate program.  The course work, reading and writing were highly academic at Houghton, consistently challenging, and spot-on for what pastors and scholars need. You may call me biased but I had a wonderful time attending Houghton College and studying Christian Ed and Bible.  I now wished that I had listened to my heart and taken Religion.  But I believe that Houghton adequately prepared me for Seminary or to put it in other words – Seminary is now a breeze because of Houghton.  I would recommend this program to any individual who is interested in pursuing a career in ministry for if I had it to do all over again, I would choose Houghton College – where the professors are genuine and the experience is second to none. I was most impressed by the ability of professors to not only teach academic material, but to live, to incarnate their teachings.  It is one thing to read about skilled pastors and altogether another experience to interact with them on a regular basis.  (Rebecca Rowley; rgr99@mac.com)
