Highlander Wilderness Adventure

The Highlander Wilderness Adventure program is more than just an adventure trip!

It combines problem-solving tasks and skills training in God's creation with group interaction and personal reflection. This is an experience that will stretch the total person: physically, socially and spiritually.   It is also an academic program, for which you may receive 2 hours of credit.

Highlander is a very unique experience, which is offered at the end of every summer to incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Highlander is designed for the average student.  You do not need to have previous outdoor experiences, but at the same time the most experienced outdoor adventurer should be able to find it challenging and rewarding.  The program involves participation on a ropes initiative course, backpacking, canoeing, solo experience, rock climbing and a 5-mile "marathon."

The HWA program goals include the following:

  • The student will experience joy after hardship.
  • The student will find adventure and satisfaction from doing hard work.
  • The student will learn skills that build confidence.
  • The student will learn to look inward to self, outward to others, and upward to God.

This program is intended to be a catalyst for the Highlander process - a process of growth, challenge, and discipleship which finds its beginning long before the program itself and is expected to continue for a lifetime.
