Majors & Minors
Academic work at Houghton is organized into four categories:
- Integrative Studies
- Major
- Minor
- Electives
Integrative Studies
Integrative Studies include courses in a variety of disciplines: Bible, English, history, foreign language, math, physical education, communication, theology, philosophy, fine arts, social science, and natural science. These courses comprise the backbone of a liberal arts education.
Major
Each student must select a major course of study from among 40 options. A major requires a minimum of 24 credits in a specific discipline. Transfer students must complete a minimum of half their major at Houghton.

Minor
A minor requires at least 12 hours in a given discipline. Minors are optional.

Electives can be courses in any academic discipline and do not count for major, minor, or integrative studies credit.
