Personal Statement

All first-year applicants are required to submit a personal statement along with the application for admission. Transfer applicants are not required to submit a personal statement but are strongly encouraged to do so. Below is the prompt for the personal statement that is found on our application for admission.

Houghton's Mission Statement: Houghton College provides an academically challenging, Christ-centered education in the liberal arts and sciences to students from diverse traditions and economic backgrounds and equips them to lead and labor as scholar-servants in a changing world.

Why do you desire to be a part of a community that integrates academic excellence and Christian faith?

Thoughtfully reflect on this question and respond in approximately 250 -500 words (roughly one half to one full page). A well-written personal statement will include relevant life experiences that have shaped you (e.g., books you have read, people who have had an influence on you, challenges you have overcome, etc.) and address how you hope to contribute to and benefit from the Christ-centered educational environment described in our mission statement above.
