Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarship Program

The application for the Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarships is now closed for Fall 2013.

The Houghton legacy is a storied one, with countless testimonies of God using alumni to serve the world through their passions and gifts. From becoming some of the first missionaries in Sierra Leone, to helping develop the world's first pacemaker, Houghton alumni are true visionaries, making a difference in this world.

As a testimony to Houghton’s commitment to excellence, we offer financial awards to select students in a competitive scholarship process. Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarships are offered in honor of Houghton’s first president.

Scholarship Amounts

Excellence scholarships are awarded in the following amounts:

  • $1,000 Excellence Scholarship: awarded to each student who participates in an interview
  • $4,000 Excellence Scholarship: takes the place of the $1,000 Excellence Scholarship and is awarded to select students in each scholarship category
  • Full-tuition James S. Luckey Scholarship: takes the place of an Excellence award and is awarded to one student in each scholarship category

J. Kenneth Boon Excellence in Science & Technology Scholarship

Excellence in the Arts Scholarship

As a teacher, researcher, mentor and servant leader in the Houghton Community, Biology Professor Ken Boon demonstrated excellence in his field and left a legacy of service and commitment.  This award is intended for students who excel in the areas of natural science, math, and technology. 

Drawing on a rich history in the arts and Christian life, Houghton College offers this award to students who demonstrate exceptional talent in one or more areas of the arts or Christian life and service.  We define the arts broadly to include performing, visual, theatrical, communication, writing, etc..

David C. Pollock Excellence in Global Engagement Scholarship

Excellence in Community Impact Scholarship

As a teacher, author, advocate, and friend, Dave Pollock had a genuine interest and desire to engage respectfully with people from diverse cultures around the world.  He was an excellent role model for global engagement and embodied many of the characteristics which define this award.  This award is intended for students who represent diverse backgrounds and desire to pursue a career that involves some form of global engagement; ministry, service, international development, business, or working in their chosen field in an intercultural environment.

A hallmark of the Houghton experience is putting scholarship and faith into practice in the form of civic engagement. This award is intended for students who demonstrate a commitment to bettering their local communities in the form of service projects and community action.

James S. Luckey Full-Tuition Scholarship

The James S. Luckey Scholarship, named for the first President of Houghton College, awards an amount equal to 100 percent of first year tuition costs. Four awards will be offered and will be renewable each year based on maintaining a 3.0 GPA and of the original amount of tuition the first year it is awarded.

The James S. Luckey award is intended to attract high quality, academically capable and spiritually engaged students to Houghton who have a stated interest or intended vocation in one of the four thematic areas of emphasis at Houghton.

Criteria for Consideration

  • Successful completion of the admission process as demonstrated by completing the application for admission and being admitted to the college by January 4 at the latest.
  • Completion of the Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarship application (including essay) by January 4 at the latest.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.25 in high school or previous college work; both first-year and transfer students are eligible to be considered for this award.
  • Involvement in scholarship weekend by invitation to be announced as applications are completed and until January 4.

Application Process

Step 1 Apply for admission to Houghton College. In order to be considered, all application materials need to be submitted by January 4, 2013 at the very latest.
Step 2 Complete application for the Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarships (the application is one and the same); this form must be submitted by January 4 at the very latest.
Step 3 Wait to be notified if you have been selected to come for an interview once your application is complete and a decision is made.
Step 4 Attend the Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarship interview weekend on Monday, January 21, 2013 (note: students also interviewing for a Houghton Honors Program can opt to have their Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarship interview while they are on campus for their Honors interview).
Step 5 Receive notification of the Excellence and James S. Luckey Scholarship decision after March 1, 2013.
