Excellence Scholarships

To help our students explore and expand their interests and gifts, we offer scholarships to students in the following categories:

  • The arts
  • Science and technology
  • Global engagement

Excellence scholarships are given in the amounts of $5,000 and full-tuition and are renewable each year of attendance.

James S. Luckey Excellence Scholarship

The James S. Luckey Scholarship, named for the first President of Houghton College, awards an amount equal to 100 percent of first year tuition costs. Three awards will be offered each academic year beginning in 2012-2013.

The James S. Luckey award is intended to attract high quality, academically capable and spiritually engaged students to Houghton who have a stated interest or intended vocation in one of the three thematic areas of emphasis at Houghton in this coming year – Science and technology, Global engagement and The arts and Christian life.

J. Kenneth Boon Science & Technology
Excellence Scholarship

As a teacher, researcher, mentor and servant leader in the Houghton Community, Biology Professor Ken Boon demonstrated excellence in his field and left a legacy of service and commitment.  This award is intended for students who excel in the areas of natural science, math, and technology. 

This award is for $5,000 annually and between 4-8 awards will be offered each year.

The Arts Excellence Scholarship

Drawing on a rich history in the arts and Christian life, Houghton College offers this award to students who demonstrate exceptional talent in one or more areas of the arts or Christian life and service.  We define the arts broadly to include performing, visual, theatrical, communication, writing, etc. 

This award is for $5,000 annually and between 4-8 awards will be offered each year.

David C. Pollock Global Engagement Excellence Scholarship

As a teacher, author, advocate, and friend, Dave Pollock had a genuine interest and desire to engage respectfully with people from diverse cultures around the world.  He was an excellent role model for global engagement and embodied many of the characteristics which define this award.  This award is intended for students who represent diverse backgrounds and desire to pursue a career that involves some form of global engagement; ministry, service, international development, business, or working in their chosen field in an intercultural environment. 

This award is for $5,000 annually and between 4-8 awards will be offered each year.

Criterion

  • Successful completion of application process to Houghton College
    by December 12, 2011
  • Completion of Excellence scholarship application including essay/artifact description
  • Minimum GPA of 3.25 in High School or in previous college work; both first year and transfer students are eligible.
  • Involvement in Scholarship/Honors weekend activities by invitation

Timeline

December 12, 2011: deadline for the completion of your application to Houghton College

January 1, 2012: deadline for Excellence scholarship application

Mid-January: notification of invitation to interview

Recipients will be announced on Friday, March 16, 2012
