Transfer Guidelines
Houghton Degree Requirements
In order to graduate from Houghton College you must meet the following requirements:
- Complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at Houghton.
- Complete at least 50 percent of your major requirements at Houghton.
- Complete a minimum of 124 credit hours (128 for B.Mus. degree)
Advanced Placement, IB and CLEP credit
Houghton accepts credit for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and CLEP. Find out more details here.
How will my credit transfer?
- Previous college course work must have been completed at a regionally accredited college or university.
- Transfer credit will be given for appropriate courses completed in which a grade of C- or above has been earned.
- Houghton will accept up to 67 credit hours from two-year colleges in which a grade of C- or higher has been earned.
- In the case of a Bible college, accreditation by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) is necessary.
Can I transfer with an Associate degree?
If you receive an A.A. (Associate in Arts) or an A.S. (Associate in Sciences) degree from an accredited community college or junior college, you may enter Houghton as a junior with general education requirements considered complete, except for Biblical Literature and Introduction to Christianity.

Degree Audits
Degree audit sheets outline exact degree requirements for each major at Houghton. Students considering transferring to Houghton can make use of these sheets in a variety of ways:
- They can assist you in evaluating how your course work will fit into the Houghton curriculum.
- For students entering a community college with intent to transfer to Houghton for completion of a bachelor’s degree, the degree audit sheet will be a valuable document for use with your community college transfer counselor.
When you apply for admission, you will be given a degree audit sheet showing you how previous college course work will be credited toward a particular major. This is a concise way for you to see what will transfer and what courses need to be completed for a degree at Houghton. Course Equivalency/Advising
As you consider transferring to Houghton you should take full advantage of the resources below and make contact with the Houghton College Transfer Counselor early in your college experience:
- Make yourself aware of Houghton degree requirements for the major(s) you are considering. Consult the Houghton catalog or a major's degree audit sheet for details regarding major requirements.
- It is recommended that transfers take courses that are equivalent to our core requirements (integrative studies courses).
- Consultation on course equivalency or other transfer issues is always available by e-mail or by calling 800-777-2556. Consultation is recommended before enrollment in a particular course.
- Keep in mind that students transferring with an A.A. (Associate of Arts) or A.S. (Associate of Science) degree will meet all Houghton core (integrative studies) requirements, except for Biblical Literature and Introduction to Christianity.
