TCK and International Student Profiles

Why Houghton? I grew up in a small Christian boarding school. The size of the school allowed me to become close to my teachers, several of whom graduated from Houghton. I was actually vehemently opposed to studying in the States, but then they started telling me about Houghton and it seemed like everything I wanted. It is very mission-orientated and they appreciate different cultures and try to understand them. Houghton also has a great pre-med program, which was a requirement for me. The final push was the great opportunity of the Houghton Honors Program. What has helped most in your transition to Houghton? A lot of people visited Houghton before they came here; I, however, didn’t. In fact, when I came for school in August, it was my first time in the States. I attended Houghton's International Transition Week and it did wonders in helping me adjust. We came a week earlier than everyone else, so we had a chance to meet some of the professors, upper class students, and general staff. They also showed us places outside of Houghton that otherwise we would have had to find on our own. Most of all, the Transition week allowed me to make some close friends with backgrounds like my own that I might otherwise have had trouble finding. |

What has helped you most in your transition to Houghton? The most helpful thing for me was making good friends during my first week of school. All the people on my floor are very close together and are amazing to hang out with. What is your favorite Houghton class so far? I'm enjoying all my classes but especially Principles of Writing and Presentational speaking! Dr. Zoller and Dr. Gaerte are so amazing and VERY helpful. They make me feel like I want to go to their classes everyday!!! |

Why Houghton? I Choose Houghton because, first of all, it is a Christian school. It has a faith-based curriculum and lectures that make students realize their impact in the world and what they can do to change the world. What is a highlight of your Houghton experience? So far the highlight of my Houghton experience has been the new friends I have made. College is very demanding, for sure, but I was able to make a lot of new friends which I hope to keep after I graduate go on with my life. What is your favorite class, or classes so far? My favorite class so far it is Bible Literature. I like discussing and learning about the Bible and furthering my knowledge about the Lord. |

Pensiri How was your transition to Houghton? The transition wasn’t hard at all. Transition weekend helped me to meet other MKs and TCKs, and the shopping trip really helped because my parents didn’t come with me to drop me off at college. I had to form my own community and just jump into Houghton, and they accepted me with wide open arms. What has helped you most in your transition to Houghton? I visited Houghton in the spring for an Honors program interview weekend. I stayed for nearly a week, got to know the people I stayed with, and I got to know the layout of the dorm and college pretty well. Not feeling lost was really nice when I came back in the fall. Plus, coming and already knowing some of the people made the transition much easier. I also got involved right away in Shakespeare Players and a couple of other things. Getting involved introduced me to so many people whom I might not have met. |

Audrey Why Houghton? I chose Houghton because I was looking for a Christian College that resembled the Christian High School I had just been to. I was looking for a community where God was real not just through words, but also through actions to the community around them. I chose Houghton because it was also the size I wanted - I didn't want to get lost in a crowd. What is a highlight of your Houghton experience? The highlight has to be gospel choir! I love doing that because it's not only a group of people singing, it has become a family of brothers and sisters praising God. |

Why Houghton? I chose Houghton because I wanted to attend a Christian
institution that was also academically solid. Living in Ontario,
Houghton College is in the perfect location, just the right distance
away from home. I also appreciated the small student body size and
class sizes; it makes education a lot more personal. It also had
good facilities, given the size, both for academics as well as
athletics. The closest Tim Horton's is half an hour away. Being a biology major, I really enjoy my biology classes. But I
also like all the classes I have to take as part of the liberal arts
curriculum. Many of them are very interesting and are classes I
wouldn't have taken elsewhere. I was able to be a part of the East Meets West Honors Program and go to Eastern Europe last May term. |

Katrina Why Houghton? It's small (very community-oriented), Christian, has great faculty, off-campus programs, wonderful honour's programme (that was a big one), and I've had lots of friends who've gone here. What is your favorite Houghton class so far? I have loved ALL my classes, but I think it would have to be Cultural Anthropology. Dr. Arensen is an amazing prof and he teaches a lot about Africa. It has basically solidified and given voice to a lot of what I've already learned passively. |
