Campus
Improvements
During recent years, the Houghton
campus has become more functional and more beautiful. The
construction of the Center for the Arts, the renovation and
expansion of the Willard J Houghton Library, and the creation of
the Alumni Athletic Complex are a few notable examples.
Over the past year we have
continued to improve our facilities. Here's an inside look at some of our current and future projects...
Wesley Chapel
Renovations
As
a Christian college, Houghton is committed to the integration of
faith and learning, and to providing a comfortable setting for
students, faculty and staff to come together to pray, fellowship
and worship. Wesley Chapel exists for this purpose alone.
This
summer, Wesley Chapel will undergo some major renovations,
including the creation of a modern performance arena with
effective sound and lighting systems, major refurbishing to
seating, floor, wall, and window treatments, and installation of
air conditioning. Renovations will be completed by the
fall semester.

"The chapel is not
only the worship center. It is the community center, and
appropriately, the focal point of the campus. It is the place
where people most frequently come together. We're not
talking about a palace or a high-tech wonder. The medium
won't overshadow the message." - Dean of the Chapel, Dr.
John Brittain
Paine Science
Center Renovations
Modernizing
the look of the Paine Science Center and upgrading science
equipment is a priority in the coming year. During the
fall 2005 semester alone we invested over $300,000 in science equipment. An additional $1 million will be spent
during 2006.
Here is a sampling of recent purchases:
-
Multi-channel water analyzer
- Imaging
system which can acquire still and video microscopic images
- Gel
documentation system
- 40
binocular Olympus microscopes
-
Autoclave to sterilize reagents and equipment
- Magnetic
cell separator
- Liquid
nitrogen tank
-
Homogenizer to extract genetic material from cells
- Inverted
microscope
- High
performance liquid chromatograph
- Nuclear
magnetic resonance (NMR) machine
- Fourier
transform infrared
The improvements to our science
facility and equipment will build onto an already strong program
in the sciences and foster continued student/faculty
collaborative research.
The recent
involvement of our students in significant research projects has
aided their entrance into top graduate and medical programs.
These research opportunities are also important in faculty
development. Providing new equipment will heighten
creativity in the curriculum and the opportunities for continued
research involvement." - Biology professor, Dr Matthew Pelletier
Library
Expansion Project
In May of
2006 construction will begin on our library expansion project.
This expansion will add a third story to our library, providing
14 faculty
offices and 6 classrooms. A skyway connecting the library
(right) to the Chamberlain Center (left) will link the two academic
centers on campus.
This project is being completed in
anticipation of our growth to 1,400 students and the
implementation of new master's degree programs.
