So, you’re thinking about completing a Houghton degree in less than the traditional four years? You’re not alone.
It should be noted that we believe that a four-year experience at Houghton is one of the best ways to prepare for the workplace and to be shaped personally and spiritually. However, we realize that there are highly motivated students (like you) out there who may have already started taking college-level classes in high school and/or want to get a jump-start on their careers (not to mention saving a semester or two of college tuition, room and board).
We’d like to help you accomplish that goal at Houghton.
The best way to increase the possibility of completing a Houghton degree in less than the traditional four years is to follow these two guidelines:
- Maximize your time spent at Houghton (breaks too).
- Strategize in high school which and how much college-level coursework you will take.
Maximize your time spent at Houghton (yes, even your breaks).Students at Houghton can take anywhere from 12 to 18 credit hours per semester. If you make wise use of your time at Houghton, as well as taking Mayterm or online courses at Houghton (or elsewhere) during breaks, you could shave off a semester or two of college.
Strategize in high school. Don’t just take college-level coursework willy-nilly or just to “look good” on a college application. Get in touch with a Houghton admission counselor and he or she will look through the college-level course offerings that you have available in high school and help you plan ahead. For example, rather than taking 18 credit hours of under-water basket weaving (it’s a real thing, look it up), spread out your credits to meet requirements in several different areas.
But what if…? Since you’re the kind of student who thinks ahead, we’re sure you’ve got a few questions already. Take a look at the links on the left-hand side of the page, including our Frequently Asked Questions section. Better yet, visit Houghton so that you can sit down and talk with our three-year option advisor in person.
