Transfer Student Profiles

Transfer from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro How was the transfer credit process? Houghton was great about making sure I got some kind of credit for all of the classes I'd already taken. That was really important to me because I didn't want to lose what I'd already done and worked so hard on. It was a really simple process. I applied to a few different schools and Houghton was definitely the most helpful and easiest to contact and get information on how my credits would transfer. Favorite part of Houghton I came from a really big school to Houghton. The small community is what I love about Houghton College. It's nice to be so involved in what's going on, to really have a chance to get to know your professors and other students. You just don't get that sense of closeness at a huge university. You definitely won't get overlooked here. Every professor I've had has been willing to help me in every way possible. I've also developed some really close friendships. People often talk about Houghton being out in the middle of no where with nothing to do, but the truth is there's always something to do and being a little remote forces you to build stronger relationships and spend more time getting to know the people around you. I think it's one of the college's strengths. |

Transfer from a Christian college in Indiana How has the transition been as a transfer student? It was kind of hard at first, like most transitions in life. But God was by my side through all the changes, and Houghton was great in helping with transferring credits, financial aid, and offering lots of on- and off-campus activities to get involved in. Favorite part of Houghton Probably the Equestrian Program! Even though I'm an intercultural studies major, I still enjoy riding horses and I like that you can take horsemanship classes as part of your curriculum, even if you're in a different major. Advice to incoming transfer students Work closely with your advisor; he or she will do the best they can to give you the benefit of your transferring credits. I'm actually able to graduate a semester early! Also, get involved as much as you can and meet new people - just because you're a transfer doesn't mean you can't make lots of great new friends! |
Transferred from Essex Community College (Baltimore,
MD) How has the transition been, specifically as a transfer student? For me, transferring to Houghton went very well. One thing
which I was concerned about was living in the dorms, because I am
older than most of the students living there. However, I found
it surprisingly easy to meet people. Not only was I able to
meet people who were continuing their education at Houghton, but I
was also on the same floor as many of the other transfer students.
This made it very easy to meet friends, and I will be living with
many of them in a townhouse this semester. Advice to incoming transfer students Get involved and don't be afraid to meet new people. There are a lot of opportunities to get involved, such as sports, worship teams, Young Life and many others. When you live in the dorms, don't be afraid to go around to other rooms and introduce yourself in the beginning of the year. This is a time when every one is interested in meeting new people. |
Transferred from Pennsylvania College of Technology (affiliate of Penn State) How was the transition to Houghton? I knew that Houghton was where God wanted me to be, so I jumped into things with two feet and my head held high. By the middle of the first semester I was part of the Houghton "family." The transition was like when you met your best friend for the first time; there is a time period of getting to know them, and some things may be slightly awkward at first, but the friendship grows and all the sudden you are walking around the quad like it's your own backyard. Favorite part of Houghton Coming from a secular school, my favorite part of Houghton is the Body of Christ represented here. Though we all come from various denominations, and various places and purposes, we are here because of a commonality in Christ. Also, the size of Houghton allows for more personal relationships with more people. You are not just a number here - you can leave as big of an imprint as you want. Advice to incoming transfer students Get to know as many people as possible! College years go by fast, and as a transfer, it can seem like they go by even faster. Take advantage of opportunities to get to know others in your class and in your academic area. Get to know other transfers and transfers of previous years – they will have the experience and advice to share with you for whatever you might need or have questions about. |
