The art department of Houghton College has a limited number of partial tuition scholarships available for incoming freshmen interested in majoring in art. These scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate exceptional ability through the scholarship portfolio requirements.
Applicants wishing to be considered for an Art Department Merit Scholarship must submit a portfolio of original work. Your portfolio should consist of fifteen to twenty works, completed in the year of your application, that represent as broad a selection as possible.
This may include drawings from life; work in both color and black and white media, design examples, photography, prints, metal works, crafts, or sculpture. The portfolio must include at least five strong examples of drawing from observation, regardless of the concentration you wish to pursue.
Select your best work and include examples that you have done on your own initiative beyond your class assignments. You may bring or show pages of your sketchbooks as well. Do not include work copied from photographs. Reviews are conducted from digital images on CD or by portfolio review with a faculty member during a campus visit. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $5,000 per academic year, and are renewed each year that the student remains a declared art major and holds good academic standing. Submissions must be postmarked by February 22nd. Award announcements will be mailed within four weeks.
