Houghton College is pleased to welcome Marvin and Lisa Ohlson as December’s Guest Executive Dinner speakers on Friday, December 7, 2012. Hailing from a family line of bakers, Marvin and Lisa established their own bakery 24 years ago, and have been in the industry since.
Marvin and Lisa opened the doors of Ohlson’s Bakery & Café in October of 1988 in Clarence, N.Y. They started their business in their home baking out of a 2 ½ car garage with a small store front attached. After operating in that location for 12 years, they expanded to where they are currently in Williamsville, N.Y.
Ohlson’s Bakery & Café is a European style bakery offering a variety of unique baked goods. They also specialize in wedding cakes and custom-decorated specialty cake. An open dining area offers a view of the baked goods displayed in the showcases. They offer a full breakfast menu along with a lunch menu.
Baking has been a family tradition for both Marvin and Lisa. Marvin’s parents worked in the bakery industry, running a retail bakery in Attica many years ago where Marvin began his baking career. He worked in the corporate world of baking for 24 years and left a full-time position 12 years ago when they opened their shop in Williamsville to pursue growing their business. Their daughter, Bailie Ohlson, has now joined them in their family business after graduating from Houghton in 2012. She is now a fourth generation baker.
Houghton holds monthly Guest Executive Dinners for the purpose of exposing both business and non-business students to marketplace professionals from a variety of fields and areas of expertise. Ohlsons will lecture on Friday evening beginning at 5 p.m. in the South End Dining Room in the Houghton College dining hall. This is a ‘scan-in-and-pick-up-your-meal’ event open to all Houghton students and faculty.
