Houghton College will host a Clergy Tax Workshop for area clergy at Houghton's West Seneca campus located at 2732 Trasit Road, Suite 100, West Seneca, NY, on Tuesday, Jan. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Workshop will featuring guest speaker Melanie French, CPA, and is free to pastors and church treasurers and includes a complimentary lunch. The half-day workshop will assist pastors in sorting out clergy tax laws, regulations, and the five key components of pastors’ compensation: salary, housing allowance, expense reimbursement, fringe benefits and self-employment.
The workshop will also discuss how to prepare Clergy Worksheets and Self-Employment Schedules for the preparation of pastors’ personal income tax returns.
French works in Buffalo, N.Y. specializing in church and religious nonprofit accounting and audits. Formerly, French was the director of accounting for Beechwood Continuing Care and also the senior accountant for Ernst & Young. French is an alumna of Alfred University.
“Clergy taxes can be complicated, and the Office of Church Relations is eager to provide a resource to local pastors by offering this workshop,” stated Betsy Sanford, Houghton College church relations office administrator.
