07:30 PM to 08:30 PM
Houghton’s College Choir will be performing April 5 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the Wesley Chapel as a conclusion to their West Coast tour.
"Choir tour is an opportunity to allow music to sink into the marrow of your soul,” said College Choir Conductor Dr. Brandon Johnson. “It can become a part of your musical DNA in a very tangible way."
The choir toured March 21-29 in Arizona, California, Colorado, and New Mexico. During the tour the College Choir hosted the 2013 Sacred Honor Choirs, which provided an opportunity for high school singers across the region demonstrating excellence in the choral arts to perform with Houghton’s rigorously trained choir.
"It was such a blessing to be able to tour during Holy Week and Easter,” Johnson remembers. “It was a perfect time to share God's love through music."
As a choral community, “going on tour is the best way for a choir to grow closer as a group,” said Brian Clark, graduate student and College Choir’s assistant conductor. “You learn a lot about the other members of choir because of how much time we spend together.” Clark enjoyed the fruits of the choir’s dedication during the tour. “We worked all year preparing music to go out and share the good news with people all across the nation, and I feel so blessed to have been a part of it.”
Senior composition major Anne Nickerson was grateful for the experience and people --“It was very humbling to receive such hospitality from the churches who hosted us: places to sleep, rides to and from performance venues, meals, snacks, and very often excellent conversation just for doing what we love to do.”
Since its formation in 1931, Houghton’s College Choir has been acclaimed for excellence and sensitivity in choral performance.
The College Choir has toured internationally, and performed in France, Italy, Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Spain, the former Soviet Union, and, most recently, South Korea.
In the U.S., the choir regularly performs for audiences across denominations and in prestigious venues, such as the Cathedral of St. Joseph’s in Hartford, the Basilica of St. Mary’s in Minneapolis, the Church of the Holy Trinity at Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, and the Lincoln Center in Manhattan.
Houghton’s College Choir has also been invited to perform for the United Nations, World Council of Churches, the state and divisional American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and The National Association of Music Education (MENC) conventions, in addition to performing as choral-orchestral partners with the Buffalo, Rochester and Southern Tier Symphony Orchestras.
In March of 2014, the College Choir will perform at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York, N.Y.
The homecoming choir tour concert is free and open to the public.
