DNA's DNA
October 8, 2012 | 07:30 PM to 08:30 PM
Sponsored by Science & Math Colloquium and Houghton ReadsDr. Thomas Woodward from Trinity College of Florida, author of "The Mysterious Epigenome: What Lies Beyond DNA," will explore the central questions that have been raised by biology’s newest and hottest revolution—the discovery of an “executive master code” which resides above our cells’ DNA, directing genes to switch on and off at the right time and place. The chemical contours of this system will be highlighted, and the all-important health-connection of the new “epigenome studies” will be assessed. Is the epigenome implicated in cancer, and can drugs control its activity? Do humans (and other species) have the power to improve our epigenetic code, and to pass it on to future generations? How does this revolution connect with evolutionary biology? How does this area intersect with Tim Keller’s discussion of science in “Reason for God”? These and other practical questions will be addressed.
