Guest Artist: David Klassen to Perform & Give Master Class

Visiting baritone David Klassen and Sharon Johnson, assistant professor of piano at Houghton College, will perform in a recital Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at 8 pm in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall. The concert will feature selected pieces by Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann’s “Dichterliebe (Poet’s Love) Op. 48,” and Gerald Finzi’s “Let Us Garlands Bring.”
Klassen will also hold a Master Class on Tuesday, February 19 from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the recital hall. Several music students will perform for and be coached by Klassen during this time. The general public is welcome to visit and observe the class.
Noted by the Minneapolis Star Tribune for his “savvy stagecraft,” Klassen has performed a diverse repertoire, from Carl Off’s Carmina Burana to Handel’s Messiah, more recently as a soloist for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Saskatoon Opera and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Klassen is a member of the Canadian Mennonite University and University of Manitoba faculty.
Johnson has performed in venues across the country and has been featured on public radio broadcasts in Chicago, Minneapolis, and Rochester. She is one half of the duo piano team Music by Two with pianist Nancy Davis. The team will release their first CD this spring, entitledAmerican Landscapes.
The recital is free and open to the public. The Master Class is free and open to any of the public wishing to observe advanced musical coaching.
