Master Class: Opera Singer, Brian Kontes

Sponsored by The Houghton College Lyric Theater and The Greatbatch School of Music. Metropolitan Opera Bass, Brian Kontes will be guiding Houghton College singers as they present pieces from traditional and contemporary operatic repertoire. 

Bass Brian Kontes made his Metropolitan Opera debut in the 2009 – 2010 season in the acclaimed William Kentridge production of Shostakovich's The Nose conducted by Valery Gergiev. Mr. Kontes also recently debuted as the Commendatore in Christopher Alden's production of Don Giovanni for New York City Opera. Previously he participated in the production of La fanciulla del West at the Metropolitan Opera, debuted at Opera Hong Kong as Colline in La bohème, and returned to Carnegie Hall with Opera Orchestra of New York as Remigo in Massenet's rarely-heard opera La Navarraise with Elina Garanca and Roberto Alagna.

Mr. Kontes has appeared as Alexis in Barber's Antony and Cleopatra with New York City Opera at Carnegie Hall conducted by George Manahan, Zuniga in Carmen with New Orleans Opera, and with the New York Choral Society in Rossini's Stabat Mater. He also appeared as bass soloist in Beethoven's Mass in C with the Charlotte Symphony. Other recent engagements include Leporello in Don Giovanni at Seattle Opera, Alessio in La sonnambula with Opera Orchestra of New York, Palemon in Thaïs at Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Dr. Grenvil in La traviata at Opera Colorado, and Don Fernando in concert performances of Fidelio with the Charlotte Symphony.

Mr. Kontes was the grand prizewinner of the George London Foundation Competition and studied at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music with Marlena Malas, during which time he sang at Opera Company of Philadelphia. He has also participated in the young artist programs of the Opera Theater of St. Louis and the summer music program at Chautauqua Institution.
