NYCBL All Star Game 2014
July 8, 2014 | 12:30 PM to 09:00 PM
The Genesee Rapids baseball team, based in Houghton, N.Y., will be host to the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) All-Star Game on Tuesday, July 8. The event will be held at Houghton College’s new multimillion dollar Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex.
The event will feature the NYCBL’s annual All-Star luncheon, Major League Baseball scout day, League Home Run Derby and All-Star Game. The all-day event will also feature competitions for the players, fireworks, and live music by country music star Kelsey Ballerini. There will be major league scouts in attendance, along with an anticipated attendance of up to 2,000 people. The entrance fee for this event is $5 per person.
“It is a privilege for Houghton College to be able to host this event for the Genesee Rapids in their first year in the league.” said Houghton’s executive director of intercollegiate athletics, H. “Skip” Lord. “The NYCBL is a quality operation providing important developmental opportunities for current collegiate student-athletes. We are proud to be part of that by hosting this event and especially by being the home facility for the Rapids.”
The Genesee Rapids Baseball team is the newest franchise in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The Rapids are one of 12 teams from throughout Western and Central New York State in the NYCBL. The team was formed by Houghton College graduate Ralph Kerr along with the input of the other members in the Houghton RIVR Group, an organization working to bring new business and development to the Houghton area.
Inspired by his grandson’s position on the Niagara Power team last summer, Kerr began to consider the possibility of bringing such a team to Houghton. “When I saw not just him but other young men from all over the country having an opportunity to grow as Christians and using baseball as a vehicle to do that, I was really thinking it would be terrific if we could replicate that same thing in Houghton, where we already have such a beautiful facility,” said Kerr. The Rapids are owned by Kerr, and are affiliated with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Part of the day’s festivities will be a performance by rising country music star, Kelsey Ballerini. Often referred to as “pop country with an edge,” 18-year-old Ballerini packs a lot of life experience into her music, writing songs since age 13, and performing since age 3.
Ballerini is being followed by documentary filmmaker and former songwriter Tom Mabe to be featured as a new and upcoming Nashville songwriter in a documentary on the Nashville songwriting community.
The NYCBL is a summer wood bat development league for professional baseball, founded in 1978. The league gives college players the opportunity to develop their skills at a higher level of play, gain experience with wood bats, and be evaluated by Major League Baseball scouts.
