Assistant/Associate Professor of Sociology

Full time. Tenure track.  Fall 2014

The department of Psychology and Sociology at Houghton College offers a major and a minor in each of psychology and sociology.  We also offer an interdisciplinary minor in family studies.  Currently 13 students major in sociology, 9 are minors, and 13 minor in family studies.  Although our sociology program is small, our graduates consistently score above the 90th percentile on the Major Field Test in Sociology and are over-represented among those going on to earn PhDs in the field.

Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will teach an introductory course in Cultural Anthropology as well as Principles of Sociology and Sociological Theory.  Additional courses will depend on the preference and expertise of the faculty member.  Courses and research experience in rural sociology, intercultural sociology, family and gender studies, or environmental sociology are especially welcome.  The position provides opportunity to work with our urban semester program in a disadvantaged neighborhood of Buffalo, N.Y. in collaboration with the Intercultural Studies Department.  The person in this position will coordinate the sociology major and minor, with opportunity to mold the sociology curriculum and build the major.  Additional responsibilities include supervision of practicum students and service on college committees and councils, as elected.   Committee service is waived for the first year of employment.

Qualifications:  A Ph.D. is required or expected by the fall of 2014.  A combined degree in sociology and anthropology or a doctorate in sociology with an additional graduate degree in anthropology is strongly preferred.  The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and collaborative research with students, and will fit well with the mission of Houghton College.

Collaborative research that brings students into the research process is encouraged.  Modest financial and administrative support for research is provided by the institution and the department.  Additional support in the form of release time and extra funding are available on an application basis, particularly for collaborative research with students.

Salary and faculty rank  are commensurate with education and experience.  The teaching load at Houghton for 2014-2015 is three, four-credit courses per semester, or the equivalent.
