Dean of Extension Studies

Houghton announces a nationwide search to recruit an innovative, collaborative, and results oriented individual for the position of Dean of Extension Studies. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The successful candidate will provide compelling leadership for the expansion of Houghton’s adult and online programs and for the establishment of an associate of arts program.


  • Personal Christian faith that informs and animates both one’s professional and personal lives.
  • Commitment and ability to articulate a Christian liberal arts philosophy of education for the 21st century.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an academic setting and the capacity to provide that leadership in the context of a Christian liberal arts college.
  • Master’s degree in relevant field required. Earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree preferred.
  • At least five years of experience in a senior leadership role, and at least three or more concurrent years’ experience in the fields of adult, online, and distance education.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic leadership, planning and management of complex units, fiscal management, information technology management, and program evaluation strategies and models.
  • In depth knowledge of current trends and tools in distance and online learning along with experience applying accepted instructional design, course development, and evaluation practices.
  • Experience teaching both face-to-face and online at the college level.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with others as part of a leadership team.
  • The candidate should be entrepreneurial, a collaborative leader, and have excellent communication skills.

 Job Responsibilities

  • Represent Houghton in the larger world of higher education both inside and outside of the Christian community.
  • Give leadership to Houghton’s adult, online and Extension Associate of Arts educational programs in collaboration with the Academic Dean’s Office.
  • Develop and launch AA extension programs:
  1. Initiate and develop feasibility studies in each prospective distance site to project enrollment, budget, tuition levels, curriculum needs and partnership opportunities.
  2. Assist with site development and facility planning and maintenance for distance AA programs, collaborating with the Finance Office.
  3. Assess and coordinate accreditation, financial aid, and other compliance requirements for each distance AA site.
  • Provide campus-wide organization, leadership, development, marketing, and support for all online learning courses and programs. She/he will be expected to grow the number of online undergraduate courses and programs.
  • Grow Houghton’s adult education program through development of expanded delivery sites.
  • Plan and maintain budget projections and analyses for adult, online and distance AA programs and coordinate these analyses with the Finance Office.
  • Implement effective marketing strategies for adult, online courses and programs, and distance AA programs.
