Steven Thomas is Professor of Violin and Viola at Houghton College in Houghton, NY where he also coaches chamber music and the HC Philharmonia Orchestra. With his wife Martha he produces Vivace String Camp with the Attacca Quartet each summer, also at Houghton College. Vivace String Camp is an eight day orchestra and chamber music experience for string players, pianists and guitarists ages 10-18 and celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer. Mr. Thomas is the Artistic Director, conducting orchestras and programming and performing on evening concerts as violinist, violist and pianist.
Mr. Thomas is the Music Director and Conductor of the Amherst (NY) Symphony Orchestra where he is in his seventeenth season as director. This 68-year-old volunteer community symphony orchestra presents concerts free to the public. Now retired from public school teaching in the town of Amherst, Steve returns to Buffalo as Concertmaster of Broadway productions at Shea's Buffalo Performing Arts Center and as a violinist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Steve performs regularly in the Southern Tier, especially in programs sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of Olean. Adjunct to the CMSO is the Olean Community Orchestra, for which Mr. Thomas serves as Concertmaster. In Wellsville he directs the Wellsville Performing Arts Orchestra, directing from the Concertmaster’s chair.
Steve enjoys bicycling, hiking, canoeing, fishing and is a private pilot, operating a Cessna 150 airplane from Perry Warsaw Airport.
