Music Industry Instructor & Director of Technical Arts Non-Tenure Track

In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Technical Arts, this candidate will teach courses related to Houghton College’s thriving Music Industry program, manage the EMA Studio, teach courses related to the Music Industry major, coordinate weekly Chapel services and supervise all aspects of technical needs across the campus where live sound, recording, and lighting may be needed.

The Director of Technical Arts is also responsible for supervising technical needs for all events and concerts at the School of Music in advance of production dates, and summer camps in collaboration with the Director of Conferences during Summer months. Management, maintenance, and safekeeping of all EMA Studio recording, School of Music, and Mac Lab sound and lighting equipment. Train and manage tech crews for the execution of concerts, chapels and other productions. Manage all aspects of Music Industry Internship program, strengthening current partnerships and seeking the expansion of the program with new partners. Manage and coordinate annual inventory and student payroll for tech teams. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Greatbatch School of Music. This position requires a variety of day, night, and weekend hours.

All School of Music faculty/staff members are expected to participate in music admissions activities (i.e. recruiting and auditioning students); recruit for all programs; participate in events such as the Christmas PRISM and contribute to the life of the college.


Bachelor degree in Commercial Music, Music Industry, Music Production/Engineering or related field required. Evidence of a minimum of 5 (five) years teaching or leadership experience in technical arts, live sound/production & recording. Must be an AVID Certified Instructor in ProTools.

Master’s degree preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in live sound design, recording, lighting, and technology for live performances and theatre (dramatic and musical). Be well organized and detail-oriented. Demonstrate proficiency in various types of consoles, including Avid VENUE, as well as lighting consoles, including ETC Express 48/96. Demonstrate proficiency in trouble-shooting large venue sound and lighting systems. Be able to work projection hardware and troubleshoot minor projection hardware problems. Demonstrate knowledge of videography, including video recording, livestreaming, video uploading, and video file storage. Demonstrate knowledge in theatre lighting, stage lighting, lighting design, and wiring. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, video editing software, PowerPoint, EasyWorship, and ProPresenter.

Also required is ability to help students form respectful attitudes and interactions with people who differ in abilities, attitudes, and cultural experience, with sensitivity to factors that affect our own assessment of others.

Other important qualities for this position include a commitment to excellence and creativity in undergraduate teaching, a mature Christian faith, and an ability to integrate Christian faith into their teaching.
