Majoring in Chemistry at Houghton College is a great way to prepare for a career in one of the health professions or in chemistry.
At Houghton College, experienced Christian faculty members (all active scholars with PhDs) in the Chemistry department prepare and equip students interested in biochemistry, molecular biology, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and analytical chemistry to define and answer significant questions about our world. Students pursuing a degree in chemistry learn to think critically and apply their knowledge to real-world problems.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry is designed for students preparing for medical school as well as for those seeking to teach chemistry at the secondary level or those choosing chemistry as a second major. The Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry is designed for students planning to pursue graduate study and professional research in chemistry or one of its subfields, such as biomedical science, forensics, environmental science, pharmacology or materials science.

Personal Attention from Invested Faculty
With a departmental emphasis on personalized teaching and close relationships among faculty and students, Chemistry majors have many opportunities to get to know their professors on a personal level. Small upper-level class sizes allow majors to have individualized instruction and direct mentoring from faculty members. The department partners with each student in the program to help him or her work towards understanding his or her vocation and calling.
Chemistry majors are strongly encouraged to complete research while at Houghton. Students can follow their interests through independent study, do collaborative research with faculty members, or participate in the Summer Research Institute. Some students publish their findings in peer-reviewed journals or present talks and posters at regional and national conferences.
High success rates
Houghton Chemistry majors have 100% acceptance into medical school with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and a solid MCAT score. Nearly 100% of graduates enter graduate or health programs or get jobs in their field within 3-6 months of graduation.
