Family Nutrition: Sneaky Foods
Objective: Offer a course on family nutrition, including how to maximize nutritional value of WIC (Women/ Infants/ Children) approved food purchases; give parents tools to ‘sneak’ healthy, nutritious, vitamin-rich foods into their children’s diet
Approach: Aihme Ellis, project director for Cornell Cooperative Extension, will be offering a course on family nutrition, including how to maximize nutritional value of WIC (Women/Infants/Children) approved food purchases; give parents tools to ‘sneak’ healthy, nutritious, vitamin-rich foods into their children’s diet. Many of the foods considered to be affordable in the grocery store are high in calories and fat and lacking in nutritional content. Aihme’s class is appropriate for all ages, but especially parents of young children and/or childcare providers. This course will take place on Tuesday, June 15 at 7:00 p.m.
Personal Budgeting/Recordkeeping
Objective: Provide tools to manage your personal finances. Budgeting basics and check book balancing and more.
Approach: Aihme Ellis, Project Director for Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer the class this spring. Date TBA.
Selecting Vegetable Varieties
Objective: Highlight vegetable varieties that grow well in our county. Provide information on features to look for in selecting vegetables to grow.
Approach: Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer this class this spring.
Container Gardening
Objective: Learn how to select the appropriate plants for annual flower containers, taking into consideration the growing habit, light, and water requirements.
Approach: A master gardener arranged through Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer this class this spring. Date TBA.
Composting 101
Objective: Learn the basics of composting and how to best turn your food scraps and yard waste into nutrient rich gold for your garden.
Approach: Lynn Bliven, Outreach Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension will offer this class June 17 at 7:00 p.m. Lynn will teach the basics of composting and how to best turn food scraps and yard waste into nutrient rich gold for gardens. In addition to providing soil amendment information for gardeners with poor soil, Composting 101 is for anyone interested in diverting food waste from the landfill.
Backyard Poultry Production
Objective: Learn the basics of keeping and raising a few birds for food production or befriend a chicken as a backyard pet. Learn the basics of care, handling, feeding, and natural health care for poultry.
Approach: Bridgette Tojek, Fillmore Farmer, will teach this class on June 28 at 7:00 p.m.
Wildcrafting (Medicinal Herbs)
Objective: Learn about the plants, their actions, indications for use, and their parts used to make preparations. Observe how preparations are made. Investigate how to build an herbal pharmacy.
Approach: Bridgette Tojek, Fillmore Farmer, will teach this class on July 7 at 7:00 p.m.
