Physics, Computer Science and Engineering Laboratories & Equipment

Gain practical research and design experience in state-of the-art laboratories.

The best way to learn is by doing. Houghton offers a curriculum that, in addition to solid coursework, emphasizes practical laboratory experience. By the end of your time here, you'll have spent several years becoming deeply involved in a real-world research problem. Impress your future employers with your deep understanding of technical projects, laboratory skills, and ability to easily tackle new, complicated challenges.

To meet this challenge, you will work in well-equipped classroom and research laboratories, both at Houghton and other sites, using state-of-the-art instruments to solve real research problems.

Teaching Labs

Learning physics requires more than just lectures – you need to be actively involved in the process.  That’s why our classrooms are designed for teaching in a lecture-lab format.  By combining lecture, demonstrations, discussion, laboratory experiments and problem solving into a single seamless session, you are actively involved in learning both the concepts and the practical working out of the physics principles you are studying.  Even in upper-level theory courses, you will work on projects to drive home the application of what you are learning.

Research Labs

Houghton University’s dedicated research laboratories allow students and faculty to collaborate on high-level research projects. Facilities include laboratories for nuclear physics, material science, computational physics and artificial intelligence, as well as a well-equipped machine shop and teaching laboratories.
